Mentors

"Leaving a legacy
   is more important than
leaving an inheritance."

What I hope to GIVE
      What I hope to GAIN

Mentoring involves creating a relationship with someone. The bond that is developed reaches out, bringing benefits and blessings to everyone involved.

What Is a Mentor

No matter who we are, what stage we're at in life, or our age, we all need a friend. A mentor is that and MORE.

Mentors listen, support and encourage. They are not meant to govern young lives, instead to validate and strengthen them.

A Beautiful Me is looking for women who are willing to share part of their life with girls between the ages of 8 and 18. You do not have to be perfect to be a mentor. You just need to be available.

Your life experiences, your vulnerabilities and sometimes your challenges will help girls realize being human is okay. Perfection does not make us more valuable. Perhaps along the way, we as mentors will be reminded of this truth as well.

This authenticity, of being ourselves, being who God made us to be, with our strengths and weakness, makes us valuable.

Why Is This Important

Knowing that you're valuable is one thing, but being reminded on a regular basis is something all together different.

For this reason, and many others, mentoring is a vital resource for today's young girls.

As women, we understand. . . intellectually. But we also realize, emotionally all the head knowledge in the world won't help:

  • having a bad hair day
  • experiencing a break out
(which everybody told us would stop after puberty)
  • just trying to get through that time of the month

A friend who will validate our feelings, and remind us genuinely of our worth, can make all the difference in the world.

Mentoring can provide that kind of support to young girls by not minimizing their tragedies of youth, but by standing shoulder to shoulder with them and walking through it together.

When we get through these trying times with confidence it carries over into our adulthood in a real and valid way.

What Do They Do

Mentors listen, support and encourage. They are not meant to govern young lives, instead to validate and strengthen them.

A Beautiful Me is designed for three stages in the mentoring process.

  • Girls 8-18 interested in being mentored.
  • Girls 18 + coming out of the mentoring program who wish to become a mentor and need a transitioning period of training and growth.
  • Women of all ages willing to mentor.

We hope to transcend our busy lives, find meaning and purpose, but how?

Based on faith, A Beautiful Me desires to increase girls self-esteem and independence. We will walk girls through these truths:

  • they are special
  • they were created for a purpose
  • God cares deeply about them
  • they have special talents and gifts worth sharing
  • through love and support they can overcome life's challenges

Each mentor will be asked to commit for one year to our program.

They will be given a handbook for helpful ideas and support resources. This will give structure but provide room for individuals to express and meet different needs.

Meetings just for mentors will be held.

Over the course of your one-year you are encouraged to attend quarterly meetings.

At these meetings you yourself, will find support and encouragement from your peers.

Insight and leadership from the Advisory Board and those who have been in the program longer, will be available.

Mentors must understand the importance of confidentiality.

Mentors will all sign agreements, outlining the basic rights of those mentored. Understanding privacy and being able to create safe environments is vital in developing and reaching girls on a real and true level.

Mentor Screening Elements

There are three basic elements for screening volunteer mentors.
- Written application
- Background check
- References
Just as we expect our mentors to heed to a code of confidentiality, A Beautiful Me will also heed to a code of confidentiality of their mentors information.
